Cornell
Cornell University may be best known for its prestigious academic programs and its stunning campus in the heart of upstate New York, but in recent years, it has also been creating a buzz in the world of hockey. With an impressive lineup of talented players and a strong coaching staff, Cornell’s hockey program has experienced unprecedented success, making them a true dynasty in the making.
At the center of Cornell‘s success is head coach Mike Schafer. With over 20 years of coaching experience at the helm of the Big Red team, Schafer has transformed Cornell’s hockey program into a powerhouse in the college hockey world. His dedication to the team and his ability to develop players have been crucial in creating a winning culture at Cornell.
One of the key players in Cornell‘s success is their senior captain, Morgan Barron. Known for his strong leadership skills and his impressive on-ice performance, Barron has been a force to be reckoned with on the team. In the 2019–2020 season, he led the Big Red in scoring with 32 points and was named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, the most prestigious award in college hockey.
But it’s not just Barron who has been making waves on the ice. Cornell’s talent runs deep, with a roster full of skilled players who have been making significant contributions to the team’s success. Sophomore forward Michael Regush, who led the team in goals last season, and junior defenseman Alex Green, who was a key player in the team’s defense, are just a few examples of the talented players on the roster.
In addition to their impressive lineup of players, Cornell’s success can also be attributed to their strong team chemistry and work ethic. As Barron himself puts it, We have such a tight-knit group. We all want to win, and we all want to do it for each other. This camaraderie and determination have been evident in their performance on the ice, with the team consistently delivering strong performances and dominating their opponents.
But their success isn’t limited to just the regular season. In recent years, Cornell has also made its mark in the postseason. In the 2019-2020 season, the Big Red finished with an impressive 23-2-4 record and was poised to make a run for the national championship title before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And this season, Cornell has continued their winning streak, currently holding a 15-game unbeaten streak and earning the top seed in the ECAC tournament.
Beyond their success on the ice, Cornell’s hockey program also boasts an impressive academic record, with players consistently excelling in their studies. In fact, in the past eight years, Cornell has had the highest average grade point average (GPA) among all Division I hockey teams, making them a true representation of the balance between academics and athletics that Cornell prides itself on.
But it’s not just about the wins and the accolades for Cornell’s hockey program. Under Schafer’s leadership, the team is also known for its involvement in the community and its commitment to giving back. From organizing charity events to visiting children in local hospitals, Cornell’s hockey players are not only talented athletes but also role models in the community.
As Cornell continues to dominate the college hockey scene, there is no doubt that they are on the path to becoming a true dynasty. With a strong foundation of talented players, dedicated coaches, and a winning culture, the Big Red are a force to be reckoned with. And as they continue to make a name for themselves in the hockey world, one thing is for sure: Cornell’s dynasty is in the making.
