Sioux City, Iowa, may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about the world of hockey. It may not even be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about the United States’ hockey scene. But for fans of the Sioux City Musketeers, this small city holds a special place in their hearts. The Musketeers, a Tier 1 junior ice hockey team, have been making waves in the hockey world for over half a century.
Founded in 1972, the Sioux City Musketeers have had their fair share of historic upsets and wins throughout their time in the United States Hockey League (USHL). From bringing home league championships to producing NHL players, the Musketeers have solidified their place in the rich history of minor league hockey. The Early Years: Establishing a Presence in the USHL
In their first few seasons, the Sioux City Musketeers struggled to make a name for themselves in the competitive USHL. However, in the 1975–1976 season, things began to turn around for the team. Led by head coach Mike Jacobson, the Musketeers finished the regular season with a 33-16-5 record and clinched their first ever USHL championship. This win not only brought much-needed attention to the team, but it also solidified their place in the league.
Following this monumental season, the Musketeers continued to make their mark in the league. In the 1976–1977 season, they were the regular season champions and made it all the way to the Clark Cup Finals. Although they ultimately fell short, this marked the beginning of the Musketeers’ consistent presence as a contending team in the USHL.
Producing NHL Players
Over the years, the Sioux City Musketeers have been known for producing talented players who have gone on to play in the NHL. A notable name is Keith Tkachuk, who played for the Musketeers in the late 1980s. Tkachuk went on to have a successful NHL career, playing for teams such as the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, and St. Louis Blues. In 2012, Tkachuk was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the best players to come out of the Sioux City Musketeers organization.
Other notable players who have donned the Musketeers jersey include Steve Rucchin, who played for the team in the early 1990s before going on to play for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the New York Rangers. In recent years, players like Jake Guentzel, a Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Kevin Hayes, currently playing for the Philadelphia Flyers, have also played for the Musketeers.

In the 1987–1988 season, the Sioux City Musketeers made history by becoming the first team in USHL history to have an undefeated regular season. They finished with a record of 46-0-2 and went on to win the Clark Cup Championship. This remarkable season solidified the Musketeers as one of the most dominant teams in the league.
Fast forward to the 2001–2002 season, and the Musketeers were once again making waves by becoming the first USHL team to win back-to-back championships. Led by head coach Dave Siciliano, the team finished the regular season with a record of 39-13-6 and went on to claim the Clark Cup for the second year in a row.
In recent years, the Musketeers have continued to be a top contender in the USHL. They have made multiple appearances in the Clark Cup Finals, most recently in the 2016–2017 season, where they fell short to the Chicago Steel in a nail-biting Game 5.
