The Oklahoma Warriors have a long and storied history in the world of minor league hockey. As one of the oldest teams in North America, the Warriors have seen their fair share of victories and upsets over the years. One of the earliest moments of triumph for the Warriors came in the 1955–1956 season, when they won their first ever championship title in the Pacific Coast Hockey League. Led by captain Bill Heindl, the Warriors defeated the powerful team from San Francisco in a thrilling seven-game series. In 1973, the Warriors underwent a major transformation when they moved from the Pacific Coast Hockey League to the newly formed Western Hockey League. In the 1976–1977 season, the Warriors, led by coach Bob McCammon, made an incredible comeback against the heavily favored Portland Winterhawks in the second round of the playoffs. The 1980’s brought about another chapter of success for the Warriors, as they became the first ever WHL team to win back-to-back championships in 1982 and 1983. Led by the scoring prowess of forward Kerry Clark and the steady goaltending of Darren Jensen, the Warriors defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings and the Regina Pats in two consecutive hard-fought series. This back-to-back victory solidified their reputation as a dominant force in the league.
In 1995, the Oklahoma Warriors made history yet again when they became the first WHL team to win three consecutive championships. This feat was made even more impressive by the fact that they did it with three different coaches and faced tough competition from rivals such as the Kamloops Blazers and the Calgary Hitmen. The Warriors’ relentless determination and unparalleled teamwork during this three-year span made them a force to be reckoned with.
However, the Warriors’ most historic and unforgettable moment came in the 2000–2001 season, when they made it all the way to the Memorial Cup finals. Facing off against the Quebec Remparts, the Warriors delivered a nail-biting performance that had fans on the edge of their seats. In a back-and-forth battle, the Warriors ultimately emerged victorious in a thrilling overtime win, hoisting the Memorial Cup for the first time in franchise history. This incredible win not only solidified the Warriors as a powerhouse team but also put them on the map in the world of Canadian hockey.
Since then, the Warriors have continued to make their mark in the minor league hockey world, with more division championships and memorable moments. In 2018, they moved to their current home at the Chesapeake Energy Arena, where they continue to attract a devoted and passionate fan base.
