North Bay Battalion
It’s a classic story in the world of sports—the tale of two seasons. The pursuit of victory, the highs and lows, the unexpected twists and turns—all of these elements make for a captivating and emotionally charged narrative. And when it comes to the North Bay Battalion, a junior ice hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), their regular season and playoff performances have provided fans with just that.
Let’s dive into the story of the battalion’s latest seasons and explore the factors that have shaped their journey. From the loyal fans in North Bay to the fierce competition on the ice, there’s plenty to discuss and analyze.
The North Bay Battalion, originally known as the Brampton Battalion, was established in 1998 and moved to North Bay in 2013. The team has seen its fair share of success over the years, making it to the OHL finals in 2003, 2004, and 2014. However, in recent years, their playoff performances have been inconsistent, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.
In the 2018–2019 regular season, the battalion finished with a record of 30 wins and 28 losses, placing them fifth in the Central Division. The team definitely had its highlights, with standout players like Justin Brazeau, who became the first player in Battalion history to surpass the 100-point mark in a single season. But despite these achievements, the battalion’s regular-season performance left something to be desired for both fans and players.
But then came the playoffs. As the team prepared to face off against the Niagara IceDogs in the first round, there was an air of excitement and hope amongst fans. And rightfully so—the IceDogs were the first seed in the division, making the battalion’s task all the more challenging.
However, the battalion exceeded expectations, putting up a tough fight in a six-game series. While they ultimately fell short of advancing to the next round, the team showed grit and determination, leaving fans with a sense of pride and renewed optimism for the next season.
And that brings us to the 2019–2020 season. With a mix of returning players and new talent, the battalion was ready to prove themselves in the league once again. While the regular season didn’t start off as strong as fans had hoped, with injuries and key losses affecting the team’s performance, the Battalion rallied and improved their record to finish third in the division.
But the playoffs would prove to be a challenge once again. The team faced off against the Sudbury Wolves in the first round, a team they had struggled against throughout the season. Despite their best efforts, the battalion fell in a hard-fought five-game series.
While the end result may have been disappointing for fans, the battalion’s playoff performance showed a great deal of resilience and determination. With several close games and standout performances from players like Mason Primeau and Ty Nelson, the team gave their all until the very end.
So what can we take away from the past two seasons of the North Bay Battalion? It’s clear that the team has been faced with its fair share of obstacles and challenges, from key injuries to tough competition. But through it all, the team has shown resilience and a relentless spirit, a testament to the dedication of the players and coaches.
As fans, we can only hope that the next regular season and playoffs will bring even more success for the North Bay Battalion. But one thing is for sure: the passion and heart that this team has displayed will continue to inspire fans and leave us all on the edge of our seats.
