West Kelowna Warriors

The sport of hockey has a rich history, filled with legendary players, intense rivalries, and unforgettable moments. Minor hockey, in particular, has seen its fair share of upsets and triumphs over the years. And when it comes to the West Kelowna Warriors, there is no shortage of memorable moments in their long and storied history.

The West Kelowna Warriors are a junior ice hockey team based in West Kelowna, British Columbia. The team was founded in 2006 and has since become a fixture in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). Over the years, the Warriors have had their fair share of ups and downs, but one thing remains constant – their passion and dedication to the game.

As we take a trip down memory lane, let’s look back at some of the most historic upsets and wins in West Kelowna Warriors history.

The Beginning: First Playoff Appearance (2008-2009 season)

The Warriors’ first season in the BCHL was a tough one, as they finished in last place in the Interior Conference. But despite their struggles, the team remained determined to make their mark in the league.

The following season, the Warriors surprised everyone when they made it to the playoffs for the first time in team history. Led by head coach Darren Yopyk, they defeated the Kelowna Rockets (a rival team from the Western Hockey League) in the first round. Although they were eventually eliminated by the mighty Penticton Vees in the second round, the Warriors had already made a name for themselves as a resilient and competitive team.

Rising to the Top: BCHL Championship Win (2015-2016 season)

After several years of ups and downs, the Warriors finally reached the pinnacle of BCHL success in the 2015-2016 season. Led by captain Kyle Marino and a strong group of veteran players, the team finished second in the regular season standings and made their way to the league championship.

In an intense seven-game series against the Chilliwack Chiefs, the Warriors emerged victorious, winning their first-ever Fred Page Cup. They then went on to compete in the Western Canada Cup and clinched the victory, solidifying their spot in the Royal Bank Cup (also known as the National Junior A Championship).

Although they didn’t manage to win the ultimate prize at the National level, the Warriors had still achieved something monumental – becoming BCHL champions for the first time in their history.

The Underdogs: Defeating the First Place Victoria Grizzlies (2018-2019 season)

In the 2018-2019 season, the Warriors found themselves facing the top-ranked Victoria Grizzlies in the first round of the BCHL playoffs. The Grizzlies were a powerhouse team, having finished the regular season with an impressive record of 41-11-1-5.

Despite being the underdogs, the Warriors stunned the Grizzlies with a 4-1 series victory. Led by head coach Brandon West, the team played with grit and determination, showcasing their never-say-die attitude. This upset victory not only showcased their talent but also exhibited the true spirit of the West Kelowna Warriors.

The Miracle on Ice: Redemption in the BCHL Finals (2019-2020 season)

The 2019-2020 season was one for the books, as the Warriors made an incredible comeback in the BCHL finals against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. After losing the first two games of the series, it seemed as though the Warriors’ chances of winning the championship were slim. However, they managed to rally back and win four straight games, clinching the series and securing their second BCHL championship in franchise history.

This epic turnaround by the Warriors is considered one of the greatest comebacks in BCHL history and was dubbed the Miracle on Ice. Led by captain Phil Caron and goaltender Connor Hopkins, the team demonstrated resilience, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in themselves. This victory not only cemented their status as a powerhouse team in the league but also solidified their legacy as a team that never gives up.

Looking Ahead: A Promising Future for the Warriors

As the West Kelowna Warriors continue to make their mark in the BCHL, the future is looking bright for this up-and-coming team. With a group of talented players and dedicated coaches and staff, there is no telling what the Warriors will achieve in the years to come.

Whether it is their first playoff appearance, their BCHL championship wins, or their epic comebacks, the West Kelowna Warriors have had many memorable moments in their history. And with each season comes the promise of new and exciting achievements for this resilient and talented team.
